What does it mean for a phone to be "locked"?

A SIM lock, sometimes known as "network lock", or "subsidy lock", is a capability built into GSM phones by mobile phone manufacturers. Cellular phone carriers use this capability to restrict the use of phones to their own networks. A majority of phones can be unlocked to work with any GSM network. The most popular method of unlocking is providing an "Unlock Code".
